Obama Names Goldsmith National Word Czar

Congratulations to The Hired Pens partner Anna Goldsmith, who was recently named President Barack Obama's national word czar. In this newly created position, Goldsmith will oversee a $242 million budget and a staff of 14,000 copywriters, editors and proofreaders.

The move surprised many Beltway insiders, who assumed Obama would focus largely on the economy and international affairs in his first 100 days. However, during his inauguration speech on Jan. 20, the new president had hinted at the concerns that led to his decision.

"That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood," said Obama. "Our nation is at war against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred. Homes have been lost, jobs shed, businesses shuttered. And the state of business writing is in utter shambles."

During a Jan. 28 press conference, Obama said Goldsmith's first priority will be targeting the spread of egregious business speak. He cited a number of words he wants eliminated from the national conversation, including "revolutionize," "incentivize," "mindshare" and "task" when used as a verb.

However, Goldsmith's responsibilities will transcend issues like spelling, grammar and syntax.

"She'll also be looking into the rampant spread of mispronunciation," said an Obama aide, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. "Thanks to eight years of George W. Bush, we've got 124 million Americans who think 'nuclear' is pronounced 'nu-cu-lar.' Goldsmith's really got her work cut out for her."

Goldsmith's nomination is expected to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate later this week. Her impending appointment clearly has shaken long-time business partner Dan O'Sullivan, who was rumored to be a leading contender for the word czar position.

"No, I'm not upset that Anna beat me out," said O'Sullivan. "And I'm not jealous of the fact that she's landed a six-figure job with the most popular person on the face of the earth. Seriously, I'm cool."
